Kubilay Özkıraç, head of the energy workers’ union El-Sen, said the “plug” had been pulled after the government failed to respond to a 48-hour ultimatum issued on Tuesday. El-Sen members also staged a protest in front of the ministry.

The union claims that the ministry owes over 100 million TL in unpaid bills to electricity authority Kıb-Tek, although this is disputed by the government.

The Interior Ministry would be targeted next if it did not settle it outstanding bills of 17 million TL, relating to water pumps, by Monday, Mr Özkıraç warned.

Prime Minister Ersin Tatar said that while Kıb-Tek was owed money, the way to solve the problem was through negotiations.

“I prefer to sit down together and solve this [problem],” Mr Tatar said, adding that repayment plans could be drawn up for the outstanding bills.

El-Sen had issued their warning to the government while calling for public bodies to be treated no differently to private households when it came to paying their bills on time. Källa
